The Hauswurzel, which we think that we already know from a couple of paintings, appears in the exhibition as a real, three-dimensional, physically tangible object in the here and now as well as a challenge to the intangibility and evasion of the painted and two-dimensional but no less real world of the image. The realm of roots is, by its very nature, a dark one. We bring this one inside the building where it flexes like an elbow within the spaces of the museum. The 20-fold enlargement permits us to delve into this world of strange forms that lies on the borderline between the animal and the vegetable. There is something dangerous and utopian yet also, at the same time, protective about the object, which represents the intangibility and vastness of the natural and transformative process that we see on our daily tours of the forests and the cliffs. An important characteristic of the root is the ambiguity generated by the fact that it lives simultaneously in two milieus with radically different structures, earth and air. This fragment comes from our new home. We found it in the Göscheneralp Valley and uncovered it with a meticulous precision that was almost archaeological. For us, such confrontations with natural phenomena have both metaphysical and philosophical qualities.

Die Hauswurzel, die wir aus der einen oder anderen Malerei bereits zu kennen glauben, erscheint als reales, dreidimensionales, physisch erfahrbares Ding im Hier und Jetzt und als Brechung zur Nicht(be)greifbarkeit und dem Sich-Entziehen der gemalten, zweidimensionalen, aber nicht minder realen Bildwelten. Die Welt der Wurzeln liegt naturgemäss in der Dunkelheit. Wir holen sie ins Innere des Hauses, dort spannt sie sich wie ein Ellbogen in die Architektur des Museums. Die 20-fache Vergrösserung erlaubt ein Eintauchen in die seltsame Formenwelt, die zwischen tierisch und pflanzlich kippt. Sie hat etwas Gefährliches, Utopisches wie auch glei-
chermassen Beschützendes, steht für das Unbegreifliche und Übergrosse der Natur- und Verwandlungsprozesse, die wir auf unserer täglichen Tour in die Wälder und Felsen beobachten. Ein wesentlicher Charakter der Wurzel ist ihre Doppeldeutigkeit, lebt sie doch als einziger Organismus gleichzeitig in zwei Milieus, die sich in ihrer Struktur radikal unterscheiden, Erde und Luft. Das Fragment stammt aus unserer neuen Heimat, ein Fundstück aus dem Göscheneralp-Tal, das wir in minutiöser, beinahe archäologischer Feinarbeit freigelegt haben. Sich mit Naturphänomenen zu konfrontieren, hat für uns metaphysische und philosophische Qualitäten.
